New Site for Higher Education Web Professionals

Karine Joly has launched a new site for the higher education web community called Higher Ed Experts. The purpose of this site is to “provide professional development and social networking online opportunities to higher ed professionals working in Web, marketing, PR and admissions offices.”  What differentiates this site is the focus on utilizing new tools to connect and collaborate.  I’m hopeful that the social network component of the site will become a reality and I encourage everyone to participate. (Remember Metcalfe’s Law). I wish Karine and everyone else involved with Higher Ed Experts teh best of luck with this site.

Today We Are All Hokies

vtToday my thoughts and prayers are with Virginia Tech. I made many trips to Blacksburg when I was coaching lacrosse and I always found everyone associated with the university to be good people. It was no surprise today as I watch the story unfold on television and saw the dignity and courage displayed by the Hokie Nation. Look no further than Nikki Giovanni’s closing remarks at today’s convocation for the true spirit of Virginia Tech.

All higher education web professionals today are taking a close look at how to improve communications in emergencies. Karine Joly has written an excellent post on lessons learned in crisis communications. She also has written on using Twitter as another emergency communications channel. Most people I’ve spoken with in the past about Twitter didn’t see the value, but using it in during a crisis like we saw yesterday makes perfect sense.

Separating Content from Presentation

Sabres LogoThe National Hockey League season ended today and the Buffalo Sabres won the Presidents’ Trophy which is given to the team with the best record. Being a longtime Sabres fan, I ‘ve decided I’m going to change the design of this site to the Sabres colors for the duration of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Through the beauty of CSS, I was able to change the colors and layout in only a few minutes. It’s times like this that I fully appreciate Web Standards and the ability to separate content from presentation.

Go Sabres!

Planet Mobile Web

Planet Mobile Web is a service hosted by The W3C that aggregates blog posts related to the mobile web.  This is an excellent resource that I highly recommend.
