Companies started to integrate Social Media up and down and side to side in the organization, both externally as well as internally. 2008 is about social media strategy and campaing. So job of CMO can be really exciting and much in demand.</description>

		<description>I think it's a resource issue. The money isn't given for proper hardware to test everything out. The people doing the testing are strapped for time and have more on their plate than can be easily managed. Restricting the usability buys the designer/programmer one platform to develop for, therefore cutting back on the amount of work needed to release something. Absolutely not ideal, but a reality nonetheless.

To follow up with your more recent post about High Ed sites becoming irrelevant, most of these companies developing apps that the higher ed institutions are using are concerned with usability - even aside from just browser issues. It is a tremendous benefit to higher ed web developers because the amount of time invested in usability basically gets pushed into the vendor's application. The vendor wants to promote their product, ensuring the most people can take advantage of it. It seems to fit in this arena.</description>

I've been ranting for some time now about the need to separate "content from container" (first rant &lt;a href="http://intermedia.typepad.com/intermedia/2006/12/content_vs_cont.html" rel="nofollow"&gt;here in 2006&lt;/a&gt;, followed by smaller rants over the course of the next few years).

To stay relevant, we're going to have to make our content available quickly in a variety of formats and then just let go. People want to pick the container, be it our own website, newsletter, facebook page, rss feed, etc. so we all need to spend more time developing good content and making it easily available and portable.

As for control, that ship left the yard a while ago.</description>

I am struck by the need to be more open and for us to understand that control does not really equal quality across the board.  I don't spend a ton of time in the public web design space, but I am seeing huge parallels between this and the creation of learning content.  I've been exploring that quite a bit recently and think the two are really connected.  At any rate, thought I'd comment. Today's higher ed designer cares more about glitz and flash (not literally Flash) than good design principles, standards compliance and usability. Since the social networks have become today's marketplace, they will eventually also become a learning platform, for educational services. This is the trend I believe we are going to see for the next couple of years. And therefore these kind of positions are most likely also going to be adopted by the higher eds. The same shift we have seen in business will eventually also translate into the eds.</description>
