In 2005 I gave my first presentation on “Emerging Technologies” and talked about RSS, blogs, wikis and podcasts. Given the exponential change of the web, calling these emerging technologies today seems behind the times
As we look down the road, I’ve been thinking about what are the new technologies. Here are my initial thoughts. As far as general concepts, I would start with the social graph, lifestreaming, aggregation and niche social networks. Tools/sites would include twine, Ning, friendfeed, spokeo, and grou.ps
I’m looking for your help to build this list. So here in April 2008, what are the new “emerging technologies”?
Mark,
This is an intriguing posts that, for me, raises a lot of questions. How would each of these play a role in recruiting or in marketing and PR?
With each of these I see people forming specialized groups, sort of satellites of special interest.
The same could have been said of Facebook a couple years ago but that evolved into a powerful site.
The sites you linked to are fascinating but I would like to read your thoughts and ideas on how they might be used (or thoughts of others.
Nice post. Thanks.
I think you have to throw mobile into that pot. I don’t know what specifically, but everything will be mobile in two years, quote me on that. The iPhone is the start, but we will be using mobile devices to fully surf the web anyplace anytime.
Also a social identity is becoming painfully needed. I don’t know if it will be OpenSocial, OpenID, or what exact form it will take, but with all these sites out there with our accounts we need to gain back control of an online identity and establishing one identity that we can carry with us between sites that also brings our friends and trust is vital. Friendfeed is a step in this direction, but there is still a long way to go.
Oh yeah don’t forget the whole idea behind the semantic web and the evolving framework of data and search.
I think you are on the right track here – without a doubt you were in 2005.
As a broad concept I think it will be about getting your content to “play” in multiple areas – the web, social networks, etc…
Also I have to think video in some form would be on this list somewhere but i am not sure how or where?
Dennis, I plan on writing a follow-up post on how these might impact higher ed.
Kyle, I agree completely that we will have to add mobile to the pot. That will be a complete game-changer.
Paul, I’ve also been thinking about how to get your content to play in multiple areas. My phrase for thinking about this idea is “free your content”. IMHO, it’s not about driving people to your web site. It’s not about your “web site”, it’s about your “web presence”
Thanks everyone for the feedback
